CM Revanth Directs Officials to Ensure Full Yadadri Power Generation by Dasara

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to take all necessary measures to ensure that the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant achieves full-scale electricity generation before the Dasara festival. Revanth Reddy, along with Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, conducted a high-level review of the state’s power sector at the MCR HRD Bodhi Pavilion and sought an explanation for the delay in the plant reaching its intended generation capacity.

During the meeting, officials explained that the Yadadri plant requires G-9 grade coal to operate at the required level. However, Singareni Collieries currently does not have coal blocks producing this particular grade, while the prospects of obtaining G-9 coal from its mines in the near future also remain limited.

The Chief Minister questioned the rationale behind constructing a power plant dependent on a specific grade of coal when the required fuel was not readily available. He also sought details on why the plant was established away from the coalfields instead of following the pit-head model, under which thermal power stations are generally located close to coal mines to reduce transportation requirements.

Officials told the meeting that the decision to locate the Yadadri plant away from the coal mines was influenced by political considerations during the previous government. They estimated that transporting coal to the plant had resulted in an additional financial burden of nearly ₹40,000 crore on Telangana.

Revanth Reddy also reviewed the possibility of sourcing G-9 grade coal from Singareni. Officials said the required coal could not be supplied because the previous government had not participated in auctions for certain coal blocks. They further informed the meeting that 14 coal blocks in Singareni have already been closed, limiting the availability of suitable coal.

With the state facing continuing power requirements, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister instructed officials to immediately explore coal procurement from Mahanadi Coalfields and Coal India.

Revanth Reddy asked Bhatti Vikramarka to hold discussions with Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy on securing G-9 grade coal for the Yadadri plant. The meeting was attended by MP Vamsi Krishna Reddy, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, Chief Minister’s Adviser K Ramakrishna Rao, and senior officials from the Energy Department and Singareni Collieries.
