CM requests central govt to approve an IIM in Hyd, proposes ₹30,000 Cr education expansion plan

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has urged the central government to approve an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad, highlighting the city’s strategic advantages and the state’s ongoing education initiatives. In meetings with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi, the CM outlined Telangana’s plans to strengthen its education sector and requested central support for key projects.

CM Revanth emphasized that providing quality education to students from BC, SC, ST, and minority communities is a top priority for the Telangana government. As part of this effort, the state is establishing 105 Young India Integrated Residential Schools (YIIRS) across all assembly constituencies. These schools will offer education from grades 5 to 12 and accommodate approximately 2,560 students each, potentially benefiting 2.7 lakh students directly.

The CM explained that these residential schools will also serve as educational hubs for nearby government schools, extending indirect benefits to even more students. The schools will be equipped with modern laboratories, sports facilities, and stadiums, with a total investment of around ₹21,000 crore.

Additionally, Telangana plans to invest ₹9,000 crore to upgrade labs and infrastructure in junior colleges, degree colleges, and technical institutions, bringing the total proposed education investment to ₹30,000 crore. To manage this funding efficiently, the state intends to set up a Special Purpose Company (SPC) and has requested an exemption from the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) limits for loans taken through this entity. Minister Nirmala Sitharaman appreciated the state’s initiatives, particularly the residential school model, and requested full details regarding the SPC.

Following the meeting with the Education Minister, CM Revanth stressed the urgent need for an IIM in Hyderabad. He noted the city’s leading position in sectors such as technology, life sciences, aerospace, defense, logistics, and advanced manufacturing. With its vibrant startup ecosystem, research institutions, and multinational companies, Hyderabad is well-placed to develop high-quality management talent to support industry growth.

The CM requested the establishment of nine new central universities and 16 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) across Telangana to meet the growing demand for quality education, especially in newly formed districts. Telangana is ready to provide land and other infrastructure required for these institutions. Proposed locations for central universities include Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Komaraddi, Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Nagarkurnool, Suryapet, Vikarabad, and Nirmal districts. The CM also suggested districts for JNVs including Hanamkonda, Janagam, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Jogulamba Gadwal, Mahabubabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Medak, Mulugu, Narayanpet, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla, Vikarabad, Wanaparthy, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri.

CM Revanth highlighted that while 21 IIMs operate across 19 states and one union territory, Telangana currently lacks an IIM. The University of Hyderabad campus has identified 200 acres for the institute, with a transit campus ready for immediate use. The state government is fully prepared to support the required infrastructure, pending central approvals. He also noted Hyderabad’s excellent connectivity via air, rail, and road, along with its favorable environment and history of nurturing talent, making it an ideal location for an IIM.

The CM also met Congress President Sonia Gandhi to discuss the “Telangana Rising Global Summit 2025,” held at the Future City campus on December 8-9. He presented her with the “Telangana Rising 2047” vision document, outlining the state’s long-term development strategy. Sonia Gandhi praised the state government’s efforts, and Revanth expressed confidence that Telangana would continue progressing according to this vision.
