In a proud moment for the Telugu states, Telangana Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy hosted a special felicitation ceremony on Tuesday to honor young cricketer Tilak Varma for his stellar performance in India’s victorious Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan. The event, held at the state secretariat, saw the exchange of a cricket bat and a jersey inscribed with “TILAK 72,” symbolizing recognition of Varma’s rising stature in international cricket. Attended by Minister Vakati Srihari and SATS Chairman Shivasena Reddy, the gathering underscored the state’s pride in its homegrown talent.

The Asia Cup 2025 final, played on September 28 in Colombo, witnessed India clinching a thrilling 5-wicket victory over arch-rivals Pakistan, securing their ninth title. Tilak Varma emerged as the architect of this triumph, delivering an exceptional unbeaten half-century that steered India to chase down 147 runs with just four balls to spare. Facing a tense situation at 96/5, Varma showcased remarkable composure, scoring 67 off 43 balls, including six boundaries and two towering sixes. His partnership with Rinku Singh (34) added an unbeaten 54 runs, turning the game on its head and silencing the Pakistani bowling attack led by Shaheen Afridi. This knock, marked by innovative stroke play and nerves of steel, was hailed as a defining moment, earning him the Player of the Match award and cementing his reputation as a T20I middle-order dynamo.

Varma’s journey from Hyderabad’s modest streets to international glory is nothing short of inspirational. The son of an electrician, he was spotted playing tennis ball cricket by a local coach, who nurtured his innate talent. His domestic prowess highlighted by a 39-run T20I debut against West Indies in 2023 and leadership of South Zone in the 2025-26 Duleep Trophy paved the way for this breakthrough. In the final, his ability to switch gears and deliver under pressure exemplified why he is seen as a future cornerstone of Indian cricket.

For Telangana and the Telugu states, this achievement is a source of immense pride. Feeling proud that he hails from the Telugu states, Chief Minister Reddy lauded Varma’s dedication, presenting him with a bat as a token of appreciation. The gesture also reflects a strategic move to uplift regional morale amid economic challenges, with the state’s GST collection growth at a modest 5.5% and stamp duty revenue at 77% of targets. By honoring Varma, the government seeks to inspire the youth and counter governance critiques with a narrative of success.

The ceremony featured warm exchanges, with Varma gifting Reddy a signed bat, symbolizing mutual respect. Social media buzzed with congratulatory messages, with fans hailing him as “Telugu Pride.” As India refused to accept the trophy from ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi post-match-citing diplomatic tensions-Varma’s performance shone as the true symbol of victory. At just 23, his ceiling appears limitless, and for the Telugu states, he is a beacon of hope and excellence on the global stage.
