AP targets 4,792 MW solar and 5,000 EV chargers in new energy roadmap

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a high-level review meeting with the state electricity department, focusing on three key areas: providing free electricity to certain households, promoting renewable energy, and advancing eco-friendly transportation.

The CM directed that handloom workers receive up to 200 units of free electricity and power loom units up to 500 units. He emphasized the importance of uninterrupted, high-quality power supply across the state and instructed measures to reduce transmission and distribution losses from the current 9.2% by 2029.

Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, the state aims to generate 4,792 MW of solar power, promoting solar energy use in agriculture. Chandrababu also instructed rapid installation of solar panels on government buildings to increase clean energy production. Agreements already in place for solar rooftop projects should begin operations within 60 days.

Chandrababu announced a phased transition of all APSRTC buses to electric vehicles, starting with the immediate procurement of 1,000 electric buses. He also instructed the establishment of 5,000 EV charging stations across Andhra Pradesh.

The CM asked electricity companies to focus not only on tariff-based revenue but also on non-tariff income, which would enhance their financial stability. Measures to reduce power procurement costs, including power-swapping agreements with other states, were also discussed.

Incentives for ferro-alloy industries have been extended for another year, costing the government ₹1,053 crore. Thermal power station byproducts like fly ash are being promoted for industrial and construction use. The CM urged awareness campaigns on energy conservation and the use of energy-saving devices among government departments and the public.

Launched in 2019 by the central government, the PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan) scheme helps farmers set up solar power plants (0.5 to 2 MW) on their land. Farmers can use the electricity for their own needs and sell excess power to DISCOMs, providing them with a long-term, stable income. The scheme offers up to 60% central subsidy, with additional support for scheduled caste/tribe farmers in some states.

The PM-SURYA scheme promotes solar panels on residential rooftops, offering up to 300 units of free electricity per month. Beneficiaries can save around ₹32,000 annually on electricity bills, and surplus electricity can be sold to the grid. The central government provides subsidies of up to ₹78,000. Applications can be submitted online at pmsuryaghar.gov.in or at local offices with proof of residence, Aadhaar, and electricity bill details.
