Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has called upon journalists to play a proactive role in the state’s overall development by offering constructive analysis and responsible reporting.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the 11th plenary meeting of the Indian Journalists Union held at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram in Vijayawada on Saturday.

The Chief Minister stated that during the past five years of “misrule,” the media had lost its voice, and asserted that press freedom had been restored after the coalition government assumed office.

Call for restoration of values

Naidu expressed concern over the current trends in journalism, warning that media organisations being controlled by political parties pose a serious threat to democracy and society .

“Fabricating lies and indulging in character assassination is not the duty of the media,” he said.

He also recalled what he described as a smear campaign against him during the previous regime, alleging that the death of Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy was initially portrayed as having a heart attack and later used to publish false narratives under titles like “Narāsura Raktacharitra.” He urged journalists to take initiative in curbing the misuse of social media .

Need for progressive journalism

Describing his administration as “media-friendly,” the Chief Minister clarified that the government is not asking for only positive news but expects progressive reporting that contributes to the state’s development .

He remarked that the damage suffered by Andhra Pradesh between 2019 and 2024 exceeded the losses caused by bifurcation.

Criticising the three-capital proposal, he said it diluted the state’s future and alleged that attempts were made to suppress questioning media through “dark orders” like GO No. 2430 . He added that the Assembly has now passed a resolution granting legal status to Amaravati and expressed confidence that it will transform into a world-class city within five years .

Focus on journalists’ welfare

Naidu assured that his government is committed to addressing journalists’ issues. He noted that during the previous Telugu Desam Party tenure, facilities such as accreditations for mandal reporters, welfare funds, and accident insurance were introduced.

Alleging that the previous government reduced accreditations by half, he announced that all eligible journalists will be granted accreditation under the current administration. He also said that allocation of land for the IJU office in Amaravati will be examined by a sub-committee.

Further, the Chief Minister stated that any attacks on journalists will be investigated by officers of Superintendent of Police rank , ensuring stricter accountability.
