CM Chandrababu Directs Officials to Declare Drought Mandals on October 1

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to scientifically assess the impact of the prevailing dry conditions and declare drought-affected mandals across the state by October 1.

Naidu held a review meeting at his camp office on Saturday to assess the rainfall situation, its impact on agriculture and horticulture, the difficulties being faced by farmers and measures required to protect standing crops. The meeting also reviewed arrangements to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply across the state.

According to preliminary assessments presented to the Chief Minister, 513 mandals across 28 districts are facing drought-like conditions. Special teams will conduct field-level inspections to assess crop damage and determine the extent of losses suffered by farmers.

The teams have been directed to submit their reports by September 24. The State-level committee will examine the reports at its meeting on September 29 and submit its final assessment. Based on the committee's findings, the government will take a final decision on the drought-affected mandals and make the announcement on October 1.

The Chief Minister said the government had already allocated Rs 190 crore for measures to protect horticultural crops. He directed officials to ensure that the funds were used effectively and that farmers received timely assistance. He also called for continuous monitoring of crop conditions and immediate relief measures wherever required.

Naidu stressed the need for advance planning to prevent drinking water shortages in any part of the state. In areas dependent on borewells, officials were asked to arrange additional water tankers whenever necessary.

He gave special attention to Visakhapatnam's drinking water supply, directing officials to take preventive measures well in advance. An urgent meeting with engineers and contractors should be held and ongoing water-supply works should be expedited to ensure uninterrupted supply to the city.
