CM announces statewide rollout of ‘Sanjeevani’ digital health project

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced that the ‘Sanjeevani’ Digital Health Records Project, currently being piloted in Kuppam, Chittoor district, will soon be expanded across Andhra Pradesh. The project is being implemented with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Speaking at a public health review meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday, the CM said the government aims to digitize the health records of every resident within a year. The pilot project in Kuppam, he noted, has been successful and will serve as a model for the statewide rollout.

The CM emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare, instructing officials to focus on the 10 most prevalent diseases in the state and design targeted interventions. A 10-member expert committee, including national and international medical specialists, attended the meeting. The CM also requested the committee to showcase the state’s modern healthcare initiatives at the upcoming Global AI Convention in Mumbai.

During the session, former WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan highlighted the critical role of nutrition in public health. United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Executive Director Peter Piot emphasized the need to approach healthcare not just as a medical issue but in connection with social and economic factors. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation India Director Archana Vyas confirmed that the Foundation is collaborating with the state government to provide world-class healthcare facilities to Andhra Pradesh residents. She also announced the establishment of a dedicated Health Secretariat to monitor public health programs.

The CM suggested holding review meetings with the expert committee every six months to strengthen public health initiatives and directed Archana Vyas to prepare a comprehensive action plan based on expert recommendations.

The ‘Sanjeevani’ project is a major initiative aimed at modernizing Andhra Pradesh’s healthcare system. It will create digital health records for all residents, storing complete information about medical tests, treatment histories, prescriptions, lab reports, and vaccination records.

Centralizing this data ensures that patients’ health information is instantly available to doctors, regardless of which hospital or region they visit. This speeds up treatment, reduces redundant tests, and saves costs. Most importantly, in emergencies, a patient’s full medical history can be accessed immediately, potentially saving lives.

The project also supports preventive healthcare. By analyzing digital data, doctors can detect diseases early, issue warnings for potential outbreaks, and monitor patients’ health continuously. This allows timely interventions before illnesses become severe.

Additionally, the government can use the data to track public health trends across the state and make informed, data-driven policy decisions. The project ensures equitable access to quality healthcare, even for residents in rural areas.

Overall, the ‘Sanjeevani’ Digital Health Records Project aims to strengthen public health security, improve healthcare efficiency, and build a transparent and future-ready healthcare system in Andhra Pradesh.
