A major Cloudflare outage on Tuesday, November 18, disrupted numerous leading online platforms, affecting users in India alongside those in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. The incident began around 4:00 PM IST and lasted until approximately 7:00 PM IST, causing nearly three hours of interrupted access to popular AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok.
Cloudflare detected abnormal internal network behavior due to an oversized auto-generated configuration file, which resulted in failures in routing and traffic management systems. This was confirmed not to be a cyberattack, and Cloudflare assured users that no personal or business data had been compromised. As engineers worked through the late afternoon and early evening, services gradually resumed, with most affected platforms like ChatGPT and Grok restoring full functionality by around 7:00 PM IST.

While core Google services continued smoothly, many other high-traffic websites suffered downtime due to their reliance on Cloudflare's infrastructure.
Official status pages from OpenAI and xAI promptly acknowledged the outage and notified users in India when normal access was restored later that evening. Cloudflare issued multiple updates, promised a forthcoming root-cause analysis, and reaffirmed their commitment to preventing future incidents.
