Clear Mandate, Fresh Start: Himanta Biswa Sarma Resigns as Assam CM
In a key post poll development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday resigned from his post along with his council of ministers, setting the stage for the formation of a new government led by the BJP in the state.
The move comes after the BJP led NDA secured a decisive victory with 102 seats in the 126 member Assam Assembly. The elections were held in a single phase on April 9, while counting of votes took place on May 4, confirming a strong mandate for the ruling alliance .
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the resignation was formally submitted following the notification of results from the Assam elections 2026. The Governor accepted the resignation and requested Sarma to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government takes charge.
Later, speaking to reporters outside the Lok Bhawan, Sarma said the oath taking ceremony for the new government is expected to be held after May 11. He also stated that the BJP has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing in ceremony .
He further added that the next Chief Minister of Assam will be chosen during a meeting of the BJP legislature party, which will be held in the presence of central observers appointed by the party leadership.
With this resignation, Assam now enters a transition phase , awaiting the formal formation of the next BJP led government following a strong electoral mandate .
