Cleanliness Not a Programme, but a Way of Life: AP Chief Minister

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said the State government is committed to transforming Andhra Pradesh into a pollution-free and clean State . Addressing a gathering in Chittoor , he laid foundation stones for Solid Waste Management (SWM) projects to be implemented across the State.

The Chief Minister said “Swarna Andhra–Swachha Andhra” is not merely a government programme but a way of life . A healthy society, he noted, is possible only when air, water and food remain free from pollution .

Mr. Naidu assured that 11.2 million metric tonnes of waste accumulated over the past five years would be completely cleared by March 2026 . He alleged that environmental damage occurred due to mismanagement in sectors such as sand, mining and liquor during the previous regime. To address this, the government has allocated ₹510 crore for 110 Integrated Solid Waste Management units .

He said waste-to-energy plants are already operational at four locations , with two more units to be commissioned soon in Vijayawada and Rajamahendravaram . Emphasising the circular economy model , he said the government is focused on converting waste into wealth . Currently, 130 Swachha Rathas are being used for plastic and e-waste collection , with plans to increase the number to 660 by March 2026 . Rural waste collection is being strengthened through e-autos, tricycles and pushcarts .

The Chief Minister also highlighted the ‘Mustabu’ programme , aimed at improving hygiene in schools . He paid tributes to former MLA Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu , recalling his lifelong commitment to public service and contribution to Chittoor’s development .

Before the meeting, Mr. Naidu distributed pensions to beneficiaries and visited exhibitions showcasing products made by women’s self-help groups and items created from non-recyclable plastic . He said Swachha Andhra activities are being held every third Saturday of the month and are receiving a positive public response .

Mr. Naidu concluded that Andhra Pradesh would be transformed into Swarna Andhra by focusing on development, welfare and cleanliness .
