Classrooms in Himachal go digital-free

In a significant step aimed at improving the learning environment, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a ban on the use of mobile phones by both students and teachers during school hours. The move comes after increasing concerns that excessive use of smartphones is hampering classroom focus, distracting students, and reducing teacher-student interaction.

According to the Education Department, the decision applies to all government and private schools across the state. Students are strictly prohibited from carrying mobile phones to classrooms, while teachers are instructed not to use them during teaching hours, except in cases of academic necessity. The government emphasized that schools should create an environment that encourages concentration, discipline, and face-to-face engagement instead of digital distractions.

Education officials noted that many complaints had been received from parents and educators regarding declining attention spans and overdependence on gadgets. By enforcing this ban, the state aims to reduce screen time, enhance classroom participation, and foster healthier academic habits among children.

The directive also encourages schools to promote digital literacy in a balanced way, using technology as a learning aid under supervision, while ensuring it does not disrupt the core purpose of education.
