CJI Surya Kant Inaugurates Kargil Court, Stresses Justice Beyond Distance

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Sunday stressed that geographical distance should not hinder the delivery of justice, emphasising that access to justice must transcend physical boundaries. He made the remarks while virtually inaugurating the newly constructed district court complex at Kargil from Leh, a development hailed as a major milestone in the judicial infrastructure of the Union Territory of Ladakh .

Notably, the establishment of a full-fledged court complex in Kargil comes more than 75 years after Independence , reflecting the long-standing infrastructural gaps and delays in ensuring equitable justice delivery in remote regions.

The ceremony was attended by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena , Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Arun Palli , and several judges of the high court. “ Geographical constraints must not impede justice delivery ,” the CJI said, describing the occasion as a landmark step towards strengthening access to justice in remote regions . He added that Kargil stands as a symbol of resilience , and the new complex represents not only an augmentation of infrastructure but a qualitative enhancement of the justice delivery system , instilling renewed confidence among litigants.

The proceedings began with the national song and anthem , followed by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. A detailed 3D presentation showcased the complex’s design and facilities, including courtrooms, administrative offices, and residential quarters .

Justice Arun Palli expressed optimism regarding continued support for the expansion and modernisation of judicial infrastructure in the region. L-G Saxena lauded the CJI for facilitating the inauguration, describing it as a moment of profound significance and assured full administrative support to the judiciary.

The president of the Kargil Bar Association, Riyaz Ahmed Khan , thanked the CJI and the administration, noting that the inauguration fulfilled a long-pending demand and would substantially strengthen the justice delivery system in the district.

The new Kargil court complex stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to accessible and effective justice , reinforcing public trust and ensuring that justice reaches even the most remote corners of Ladakh.
