Cinema, Culture and Youth: Bathukamma Young Filmmakers Honoured

The Bathukamma Young Filmmakers Challenge 2025 culminated in a grand awards ceremony on Monday, December 29, 2025 , at the Main Auditorium of Ravindra Bharathi, Hyderabad , marking the successful conclusion of Telangana’s first large-scale, youth-focused filmmaking initiative. Organised by the Telangana Film Development Corporation (TFDC) under the aegis of the Government of Telangana, the event brought together key government leaders and film industry personalities. Minister for Cinematography Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Minister for Tourism Jupally Krishna Rao attended as chief guests, while TFDC Chairman Dil Raju presided over the programme in the presence of TFDC Managing Director Chekka Karnan Priyanka and several eminent figures from the Telugu film fraternity.

The Bathukamma Young Filmmakers Challenge was launched in 2025 as a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at identifying, encouraging, and promoting young filmmaking talent from across Telangana. Announced ahead of the Bathukamma festival, the competition was envisioned as a recurring platform to nurture emerging storytellers while strengthening the state’s cultural and creative ecosystem.

The primary objective of the challenge was to provide a creative space for aspiring filmmakers to tell Telangana-centric stories through cinema . Rather than prescribing a single narrow topic, TFDC adopted a broad thematic framework focusing on Bathukamma and other Telangana festivals, local culture and traditions, history, Praja Palana (people-centric governance), social awareness, contemporary issues, and government welfare and development programmes . The initiative sought to blend cultural pride with meaningful public messaging and creative expression.

The competition invited submissions in the form of short films and video songs , with an emphasis on original content created exclusively for the challenge. Several entries highlighted various welfare schemes implemented by the Telangana Government since the launch of people’s governance, capturing their impact at the grassroots level. Entries were evaluated by an expert jury based on creativity, storytelling, technical quality, and thematic relevance. The challenge received an overwhelming response, with participation from young filmmakers across the state, including those from rural and remote regions.

To encourage and reward talent, TFDC announced substantial cash prizes, with ₹3 lakh for the first prize, ₹2 lakh for the second prize, and ₹1 lakh for the third prize , along with special jury and consolation awards. Cash prizes and certificates were presented to the winners by the chief guests during the ceremony, recognising excellence in filmmaking and storytelling.

The awards ceremony witnessed the participation of several prominent film personalities, including directors Dasaradh and Harish Shankar , actor Tanikella Bharani , cinematographer P.G. Vinda , producer-actor Ashok Kumar , singers Rahul Sipligunj, Mangli, and Mohana Bhogaraju , music director Charan Arjun , film critic Ainanpudi Srilakshmi , and many others, lending the event significant industry presence and encouragement to young creators.

Addressing the gathering, Minister for Cinematography Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said the initiative reflected the vision of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in launching a people-centric government that actively engages youth in public communication. He described the challenge as a unique platform that empowers young filmmakers to showcase how welfare schemes are reaching every household. Praising the participation from rural areas, he said the initiative had created a strong bridge between the government and the people and congratulated the winners for their creativity and commitment.

Minister for Tourism Jupally Krishna Rao said Telangana has a rich legacy of valor, culture, and art, and emphasised the responsibility of the younger generation in presenting this heritage to the world. He noted that the challenge had successfully brought hidden rural talent into the spotlight and showcased the grandeur of the Bathukamma festival and Telangana’s identity on a wider platform. Assuring continued government support, he said the state would always stand at the forefront in honouring artists and nurturing creativity.

With its successful completion, the Bathukamma Young Filmmakers Challenge 2025 has emerged as a landmark cultural initiative, reinforcing Telangana’s commitment to nurturing grassroots talent while amplifying stories that reflect the state’s culture, governance, and social realities.
