CID files case over AP CM AI deepfake

The cybercrime wing of the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) has initiated a full-scale investigation and registered a case against individuals responsible for creating and circulating a deepfake video of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. The manipulated video, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to replace the original audio, has highlighted a new and dangerous trend in the spread of political misinformation.

According to a press release from CID officials, the Chief Minister had recently delivered a genuine advisory to farmers, encouraging a shift towards sustainable agricultural practices. His message focused on reducing the excessive use of chemical pesticides and urea due to their health risks. He also promoted the use of modern technology, announcing government plans to offer drones to farmers at subsidized rates for safer and more efficient crop spraying.

This well-intentioned advisory was maliciously altered. The original footage was downloaded, and its audio was completely replaced with false and misleading statements. The fabricated video was then distributed across various social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and X, under a fear-mongering caption: “CBN warning to AP farmers. Jail awaits.” The deliberate distortion was designed to incite panic and turn a positive government initiative into a negative threat, aimed at a specific section of the population.

This incident underscores the growing threat that deepfake technology poses to governance and public trust. The use of AI to create hyper-realistic yet fabricated content makes it increasingly difficult for the public to distinguish between genuine and false information. With the ease of content manipulation, such videos can be weaponized to spread propaganda, disrupt public order, and damage a person's reputation.
