Christopher Nolan is known for making cinematic masterpieces, but this time, it was his fashion choice that stole the show. At the glamorous New York premiere of The Odyssey , the Oscar-winning filmmaker walked the red carpet wearing a custom Indian Ajrakh silk tie created by New York based Indian designer Aahaan Tandon , turning a simple accessory into one of the night's biggest talking points.

Dressed in his signature navy black suit and crisp white shirt, Nolan let the handcrafted tie do all the talking. The accessory featured intricate diamond motifs enclosed within floral star medallions , a hallmark of the traditional Ajrakh print, blending understated elegance with India's rich textile heritage. Fashion enthusiasts quickly hailed the look as the perfect example of "quiet luxury."

The designer behind the now viral accessory, Aahaan Tandon , is a Parsons School of Design graduate based in New York. Known for combining traditional Indian textiles with contemporary tailoring, Tandon shared photos from the premiere on Instagram, writing, "Christopher Nolan in a custom Aahaan Tandon Ajrak Silk Tie for @theodysseymovie premiere in New York City." The post, which also featured Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, instantly drew attention from fashion lovers across the world.

The tie celebrates Ajrakh , one of the oldest surviving textile traditions in South Asia. Practised for generations by artisan families in Ajrakhpur and the Kutch region of Gujarat , the craft involves an incredibly detailed hand block printing process using carved wooden blocks and natural dyes extracted from plants and minerals. Every piece goes through multiple stages of washing, printing and dyeing, sometimes taking more than two weeks to complete. The word "Ajrakh" is believed to come from the Sindhi phrase "Aaj Rakh," meaning "keep it today," referring to the time intensive production process.

Interestingly, Nolan wasn't the only celebrity carrying an Indian touch on the red carpet. Co-star Lupita Nyong'o accessorised her look with exquisite Sabyasachi jewellery, making Indian craftsmanship one of the unexpected highlights of the star studded premiere.

While the exact price of Nolan's custom tie has not been revealed, bespoke handcrafted Ajrakh silk ties typically cost between ₹4,000 and ₹8,000 , depending on the fabric, artisan work and exclusivity. Since Nolan's tie was specially commissioned by Aahaan Tandon, it is likely a one of one creation that is not available for retail. Those looking for authentic Ajrakh fashion can explore artisan brands and heritage labels that work directly with craftspeople from Gujarat.

Beyond the fashion buzz, The Odyssey itself is making history. Based on Homer's epic poem, the film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron and others. It is also being hailed as Nolan's most ambitious project yet and the first major feature filmed entirely using next generation IMAX film cameras , adding another milestone to the filmmaker's career.
