Christopher Nolan drops first look at The Odyssey featuring Hathaway, Holland and Goth
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is shaping into one of 2026’s most ambitious films, with newly released stills and the first atmospheric teaser trailer offering a powerful sense of his grounded and emotionally rich interpretation of the ancient Greek epic. The opening visuals reveal Anne Hathaway as Penelope maintaining Ithaca’s fragile stability during Odysseus’ decades-long absence, Tom Holland as Telemachus confronting the pressures of adulthood and responsibility long before he feels ready and Mia Goth as Melantho, a conflicted palace maid whose shifting loyalties intensify the uncertainty rising inside the royal household. With its worldwide theatrical release slated for July 2026, the film has quickly become one of next year’s most anticipated productions.
Hathaway’s portrayal of Penelope emphasises her quiet strength and emotional endurance, capturing the weight of ruling a kingdom while fighting to keep hope alive. Holland’s Telemachus appears torn between fear and determination as he attempts to step into his father’s shadow while navigating a palace filled with hostile suitors. Goth’s Melantho is depicted with guarded intensity, suggesting a morally intricate character caught between survival, temptation and betrayal.
Nolan enriches the myth through a powerful ensemble cast, introducing additional key figures who shape the emotional landscape of the story. Zendaya joins the film in a major supporting role woven into Odysseus’ fragmented journey home, adding a fresh emotional dimension to his long and painful return. Cillian Murphy portrays Odysseus through flashbacks and his eventual homecoming, offering a hardened and weathered interpretation of the legendary wanderer. Ralph Fiennes takes on the role of Antinous, the calculating leader of the suitors, while Barry Keoghan appears as the volatile Eurymachus whose unpredictable nature threatens the kingdom’s safety. Florence Pugh plays Athena in a grounded, humanised form that guides characters at pivotal emotional moments, and Oscar Isaac appears as Menelaus, whose counsel influences Telemachus’ search for truth. Additional cast members include Paul Mescal as a Phaeacian warrior, Lily James as a loyal palace attendant and Ben Kingsley as Laertes, the aged and isolated father of Odysseus.
The film’s teaser trailer deepens the atmosphere with sweeping visuals and tense emotional cues. It opens with Penelope’s voice echoing through the silent palace, followed by rapid glimpses of unrest among the suitors, Telemachus’ growing fear and Melantho’s conflicted presence. Zendaya appears briefly in a coastal sequence that hints at her emotional connection to Odysseus’ weary journey. Flashbacks of Murphy’s Odysseus show brutal battles and storm-ridden seas captured through practical effects, grounding the legendary voyage in harsh realism. The trailer closes with the throne room doors trembling under mounting pressure, symbolising the collapse threatening Ithaca.
