Christian Horner returned to the Formula One paddock at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, marking his first appearance at a race weekend since his departure as Red Bull Racing team principal last year. The visit comes almost exactly a year after the end of his two-decade tenure with the Milton Keynes-based outfit.

Speaking to The Times of London, Horner said he would only consider a return to Formula One if the opportunity offered a realistic chance of competing for victories and championships.

“I'd only come back for the right thing, because at the end of the day, I want to win and I want to be with winners,” Horner said. “There's no point in just coming back for the sake of a job.”

Horner, who guided Red Bull to eight Formula One drivers' championships and multiple constructors' titles during his 20 years in charge, was removed as team principal in July 2025 as the team struggled to match the pace of the then-dominant McLaren . His future has remained the subject of speculation since his exit. Earlier this year, Alpine revealed that Horner was among a group of investors interested in acquiring a stake in the team, while former Aston Martin team principal Andy Cowell said last year that Horner had been in contact with several Formula One team owners.

The 51-year-old indicated that contractual obligations following his departure from Red Bull had previously limited his options but said he is now "technically a free agent," potentially opening the door to a return in either a management or ownership role.

Horner's exit followed a turbulent period for Red Bull. In 2024 , he faced misconduct allegations involving a team employee. Red Bull commissioned an independent investigation, which dismissed the allegations, and a subsequent appeal upheld that decision. Horner remained in charge throughout the process before eventually leaving the team the following year.

His appearance at Silverstone has reignited speculation over his next move, with Horner making clear that any return to Formula One would depend on joining a project capable of competing at the front of the grid.
