A 62-year-old Chinese national has been sentenced to 11 months' imprisonment by a court in Uttar Pradesh for illegally entering India from Nepal without a valid visa, highlighting the country's strict enforcement of immigration laws.

The case dates back to August 10, 2025 , when police at Sonauli , a key crossing on the India-Nepal border , intercepted a suspected foreign national entering India from Nepal. During questioning, the man identified himself as Zhang Young , a resident of Shaanxia, Ningxia, China , and admitted that he had travelled to Nepal before entering India without the required travel documents.

Police registered a case against him under the Foreigners Act and later filed a chargesheet. Following the trial, the court found Zhang guilty of violating India's immigration regulations.

On Monday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Kumar Mishra sentenced Zhang to 11 months in prison and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 . If the fine is not paid, he will have to serve an additional one month of imprisonment , officials said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Siddharth confirmed the court's order.

India's immigration framework requires all foreign nationals, except those exempt under specific bilateral arrangements, to possess valid travel documents and visas while entering or staying in the country. Although Indian and Nepali citizens enjoy visa-free movement under longstanding bilateral agreements, the exemption does not apply to nationals of other countries. Authorities have stepped up vigilance at border checkpoints in recent years to curb illegal immigration and ensure compliance with the Foreigners Act and other immigration laws.
