A notorious history-sheeter with a long trail of crimes, including multiple murder and robbery cases, was killed in an early morning police encounter in the city’s Madhavaram area on Monday, officials said. The deceased has been identified as Thoppai Ganesan , a key suspect in a recent high-value knifepoint robbery and at least 30 criminal cases filed against him in various jurisdictions.

According to police sources, a special team tracked Ganesan’s movements as part of an investigation into a violent home invasion and dacoity incident on January 30. In that case, suspects reportedly entered a residence in Puzhal at knifepoint, gagged the occupants, and robbed them of Rs 25 lakh in cash and 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery. Several people were arrested in connection with the incident, and Ganesan emerged as a key suspect.

The police team encountered Ganesan near the Chinna Roundabout in Madhavaram at around 5.45 am. Officials said that when officers attempted to apprehend him, he allegedly resisted arrest and attacked personnel with a weapon in an effort to flee. After warning shots were fired and Ganesan continued to resist, the police opened fire in what they described as self-defence .

Ganesan sustained serious bullet injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Puzhal, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body was later transferred to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police officials said Ganesan was classified as an “A+” category history-sheeter and had been involved in numerous violent offences, including several murder charges alongside robbery and dacoity cases, making him one of the city’s most wanted criminals.

The incident has drawn attention across Chennai, with law enforcement authorities stating that they acted to neutralise a dangerous suspect after repeated attempts to arrest him over the past months. Investigations into the robbery and other linked cases are ongoing. Encounters of this nature often attract public scrutiny, and police said all standard procedures are being followed.
