Charge Sheet Filed Against Expelled Congress Leader Rahul Mamkootathil in Rape Case
A Crime Branch investigation into sexual assault allegations against expelled Congress leader and former Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil has reached a crucial stage, with police filing a charge sheet in one of the three cases before a Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Thiruvalla , officials said on Thursday.
According to police sources, the charge sheet invokes Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. The case pertains to allegations that Mamkootathil became acquainted with the complainant through social media in 2024 , gained her trust, and later allegedly persuaded her to book a hotel room in Thiruvalla under the pretext of a private meeting, where the sexual assault is said to have occurred.
Investigators further allege that when the complainant later became pregnant and informed him, the accused allegedly threatened her , leading to the additional charge of criminal intimidation.
Mamkootathil was arrested in the case on January 11 this year and remained in judicial custody until January 28 , when he was granted bail by the Pathanamthitta District and Sessions Court .
He is currently facing three separate sexual assault cases . In the other two matters, he has secured anticipatory bail from a Thiruvananthapuram court and the Kerala High Court.
The Congress party had expelled Mamkootathil last year following allegations of sexual misconduct . He did not contest the recent Assembly elections, though he continued to express political support for the party.
The filing of the charge sheet marks a key development in the ongoing probe, with the case now set for further judicial proceedings.
