Chapman, Santner Script Dramatic One-Wicket Win to Secure ODI Series

New Zealand held their nerve in a gripping finish to defeat West Indies by one wicket in the fourth One-Day International at Kensington Oval, sealing an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

Chasing 189, the visitors looked comfortably placed before a dramatic collapse brought the contest alive. Mark Chapman anchored the innings with a composed 80, while skipper Mitchell Santner produced a calm unbeaten 34 to guide New Zealand over the line with 35 balls to spare.

The tense finale saw Santner survive a dropped chance when only three runs were needed. Last batter Jayden Lennox then withstood successful reviews for caught behind and leg-before before Santner struck the winning boundary at the start of the 45th over.

Earlier, both teams wore black armbands and observed a minute's silence in memory of Sir Garry Sobers, who passed away on Friday at the age of 89. Flags flew at half-mast, while two seats in the pavilion bearing his name were left vacant in tribute to the legendary West Indies all-rounder.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, New Zealand reduced West Indies to 81/6 before Amir Jangoo (51) and Gudakesh Motie (41) rescued the innings with an 81-run partnership for the seventh wicket. The hosts eventually posted 188.

Young pacer Matthew Fisher impressed with 3/40, claiming his maiden ODI wickets, including the prized scalp of captain Shai Hope.

New Zealand stumbled early at 6/2, but Chapman and Michael Bracewell (32) rebuilt the chase. However, Motie sparked a dramatic turnaround with 5/47, while Alzarri Joseph applied relentless pressure as wickets tumbled in quick succession.

Despite West Indies' spirited fightback, Santner's composure proved decisive, ensuring New Zealand secured the series with one match remaining. The fifth and final ODI will be played in Bridgetown on Tuesday.
