The Madhya Pradesh Assembly was thrown into chaos on Thursday when Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya used an unparliamentary word while addressing Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar , prompting criticism from the opposition and an apology from Chief Minister Mohan Yadav .

The incident occurred during the discussion on the motion of thanks on the Governor’s address. Singhar had raised concerns over an agreement between the government and the Adani Group in Singrauli , alleging that the state was preparing to pay Rs 1.25 lakh crore over 25 years under a power purchase deal. Vijayvargiya accused him of giving false information, while Minister Vishwas Sarang objected to mentioning the name of a person not present in the House.

The exchange escalated when Singhar offered to provide proof of his claims, leading to a heated debate and a flurry of accusations. It was during this confrontation that Vijayvargiya used the unparliamentary term against Singhar. Opposition Congress members demanded his resignation, and Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar adjourned the House temporarily.

When proceedings resumed, Tomar addressed the incident, saying, “Anger shouldn’t arise, but it did today, from both sides. It created an uncomfortable situation. I’m saddened by this, and both the ruling and opposition parties are responsible. The parliamentary affairs minister is very experienced, yet how the limits were crossed is a matter of concern for all of us.” He urged both sides to resolve the dispute and recalled former Chief Minister Sunderlal Patwa’s principle that anger should be visible in debate but should not manifest in words.

CM Mohan Yadav expressed regret, stating, “I apologise to the House for the words that had been uttered, whether knowingly or unknowingly.” Singhar acknowledged the CM’s apology and added, “If something has happened on my part, I also express regret. I respect parliamentary decorum.”

Vijayvargiya, reflecting on the incident, said, “I have 37 years of political experience, but I am saddened by my behaviour. If people in responsible positions don’t follow parliamentary decorum, how can others do it? I don’t know how all this happened today. Umang’s body language was a little different… I love Umang… I am sorry for my behaviour.”

Later, Singhar took to X, asserting that Vijayvargiya’s abusive language was not just against him but an insult to the 7.5 crore people of Madhya Pradesh . He stated, “My status is to boldly raise the questions of the people before your arrogant government. This very status dwarfed you so much that your true nature was revealed. Minister Vijayvargiya, who treats the public like insects, has truly demonstrated his arrogance.” Singhar highlighted that 35 families were rendered homeless due to government policies, criticizing ministers for acting power-drunk and superior to the public. He warned, “Madhya Pradesh will not tolerate insults. The people know how to respond democratically to an incompetent government driven by arrogance and insensitivity.”

MP Congress Chief Jitu Patwari described Vijayvargiya’s behavior as the height of arrogance, linking it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘New India’ , and announced protests including effigy burning. Following this, some Youth Congress workers burned a poster of Vijayvargiya outside his Bhopal residence.

This is not the first controversy involving Vijayvargiya; he recently used the slang “ghanta” to dismiss concerns over drinking water contamination in Indore , raising questions about his adherence to parliamentary decorum.
