Chandrayaan 3 Wins Prestigious US Award, Marking India’s Giant Leap In Space Exploration

India’s landmark lunar mission Chandrayaan 3 has earned another global milestone, receiving the prestigious 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in the United States. The honour is being viewed as a major international recognition of India’s growing leadership in space exploration and the technological excellence demonstrated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) .

The award was presented during the ASCEND conference organised by AIAA in Washington, where India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra , accepted the honour on behalf of ISRO and the Chandrayaan 3 team.

According to the official citation, ISRO was recognised “for the groundbreaking landing of Chandrayaan 3 near the lunar south pole region , to deepen our understanding of the moon and beyond.” The mission had scripted history in August 2023 when India became the first nation to successfully achieve a soft landing near the moon’s south pole , one of the least explored and scientifically important regions of the lunar surface.

The Goddard Astronautics Award is regarded as one of the most respected honours in the global aerospace and astronautics community. Named after pioneering American rocket scientist Robert H.
