Chandrababu Sets Sights on Transforming Andhra Pradesh into a Steel Hub
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has outlined a focused strategy to accelerate industrial growth in Andhra Pradesh by leveraging its vast mineral wealth. Emphasising the importance of iron ore, he said its scientific utilisation could significantly boost revenue while creating large-scale employment opportunities.
At a review meeting of the Mines Department held in Undavalli with minister Kollu Ravindra and senior officials, the Chief Minister directed the preparation of a clear action plan. The state’s estimated 1,938 million tonnes of iron ore reserves, he said, could attract investment worth ₹1.9 lakh crore and generate around 1.52 lakh jobs.
Highlighting the growth of the steel sector, he noted that ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India plans a 17.8 million tonne plant, while JSW Steel is set to establish a major facility in Rayalaseema. The government aims to expand production capacity beyond 20 million tonnes annually by 2035, positioning the state as a key hub for steel manufacturing.
Naidu instructed officials to fast-track allocation of remaining iron ore blocks and set clear targets of 30 million tonnes by 2030 and 113 million tonnes by 2035. He also called for the use of advanced technology to process low-grade magnetite, along with faster exploration and timely clearance of mining leases.
Reviewing performance, the Chief Minister noted that the Mines Department exceeded its 2025–26 target, generating ₹3,416 crore with 108% achievement, marking strong growth . The state also outperformed Odisha, Karnataka, and Rajasthan in growth rate.
For 2026–27, he set a target of ₹4,650 crore in revenue, reflecting a projected increase of 36%.
