Chandigarh University tops India’s private universities in QS Asia rankings 2026

Chandigarh University’s main campus is in Gharuan, Mohali, Punjab, has once again secured the top position among private universities in India in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, marking its third consecutive year as the country’s highest-ranked private institution. The rankings, released by the London-based QS organization, also place CU 16th among private universities across Asia and 109th among all universities in the continent, moving up 11 places from last year.

This steady rise has positioned Chandigarh University among Asia’s leading private institutions, reflecting significant growth in academic and research standards. The university has improved remarkably from 185th in 2023 to 109th in 2026, registering over 41% growth. While it operates in a different category from publicly funded institutions such as IITs, IISc, and JNU, its ranking highlights its competitive standing among top private universities in India and Asia.

The latest QS Asia University Rankings highlight Chandigarh University’s strong performance across key indicators, including Employer Reputation, Academic Reputation, International Research Network, Faculty-Student Ratio, Papers per Faculty, Citations per Paper, and Staff with PhD. CU performed particularly well in Employer Reputation, ranking 1st among private universities in India and 6th among all Indian universities, reflecting strong industry confidence in its graduates. Other areas of notable performance include Academic Reputation and Research Impact, where the university has steadily improved its regional and global standing.

Chancellor and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Satnam Singh Sandhu said the achievement underscores the institution’s vision of offering global-quality education and research opportunities. He noted that the university’s rapid growth aligns with India's expanding position as an international education hub. “India has seen a sharp increase in the number of institutions appearing in the QS Asia Rankings, rising from 118 in 2023 to 294 institutions in 2026. This reflects the strengthening of higher education under ongoing national reforms,” he said.

Over the years, Chandigarh University has also emerged as a strong research and innovation center. The university’s researchers and students have produced over 17,000 research publications, filed 5,034 patents, and nurtured more than 150 start-ups. Its Technology Business Incubator (CU-TBI) was the top patent-filing incubator in India in 2023-24, with 1,126 patent applications. The university maintains 515 international academic partnerships, and hosts over 3,000 international students from 65 countries.

Senior Managing Director Deep Inder Singh Sandhu said the consistent improvement in national and global rankings is a result of the university’s focus on research, industry collaboration, and global exposure for students. He stated that the rise in the QS Asia Rankings, along with earlier performance in NIRF Rankings 2025, strengthens CU’s position as one of the leading higher education institutions in India and Asia.

Chandigarh University, located near Mohali, is accredited with NAAC A+ Grade and offers more than 109 undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields including engineering, management, law, architecture, hospitality, journalism, and design.
