Chandigarh Police on Friday set up a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who was found dead with a gunshot wound at his Chandigarh residence on October 7. The case, registered at Police Station Sector 11 (West), invokes Sections 108/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Y Puran Kumar, Additional Deputy General of Police left a nine-page suicide note naming multiple IAS and IPS officers, including both serving and retired officials. The 9 page suicide note was shared with a few close IPS friends and his wife.

The SIT, headed by IGP Pushpendra Kumar, includes senior officers from the Chandigarh Police and has been tasked with conducting an impartial and time-bound probe. Officials said the team may rope in experts to assist with evidence collection and forensic analysis.

An FIR has been lodged against Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, following a complaint by Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar. She alleged that her husband endured prolonged caste-based discrimination and mental harassment at work, and that his suicide note explicitly names the two officers as responsible for his suffering.

Police sources confirmed that the note, now sent for forensic examination, refers to constant humiliation and professional isolation. Amneet P Kumar has urged authorities to arrest the accused and ensure lifelong security for her family, expressing fears that the officials’ influence could compromise the investigation.
