Century-Old Nizam-Era Assembly Hall Reopens for Telangana Legislative Council

The Telangana government on Sunday brought a piece of the state’s political heritage back to life with the reopening of the restored historic Assembly Hall in the Telangana Legislative Assembly complex in Hyderabad . Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy formally inaugurated the century-old structure, which will now serve as the official venue for meetings of the Telangana Legislative Council . The event was attended by Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar , Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukender Reddy , Deputy Chairman Banda Prakash , and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka , along with several ministers and senior leaders. As part of the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister performed traditional rituals before declaring the renovated hall open for legislative proceedings.

The building carries deep historical significance, dating back to the Nizam era , when it was originally constructed as the Hyderabad Town Hall . Construction of the landmark structure began in 1905 and was completed in 1913 , reflecting the elegant Indo-Saracenic architectural style that blends Indian and Islamic design influences. Over the years, the building’s distinctive design, intricate craftsmanship, and historical value have made it one of the most recognisable heritage structures within Hyderabad’s administrative landscape.

The hall later emerged as a central venue for legislative activity. During the period of undivided Andhra Pradesh , the structure functioned as the Legislative Assembly hall until the mid-1980s . As the number of lawmakers increased to 294 MLAs , a new Assembly building was constructed within the same premises to accommodate the larger legislature, after which Assembly proceedings were shifted there. Even after the formation of Telangana in 2014 , the historic building briefly continued to play an important role when Andhra Pradesh Assembly sessions were held there for nearly two years before the state moved its legislature elsewhere.

After the Congress government assumed office in Telangana in December 2023 , restoration of the heritage structure was taken up as a priority. The renovation project focused on preserving the building’s original architectural character while upgrading it with modern facilities suitable for legislative functioning . With the restoration now complete, the historic hall has been repurposed as the permanent meeting venue for the Telangana Legislative Council , ensuring that the century-old landmark continues to remain an active part of the state’s democratic institutions while safeguarding its heritage and architectural legacy .
