Centre Moves to Make Amaravati Andhra Pradesh’s Official Capital

After years of uncertainty over Andhra Pradesh’s capital , the Central Government is moving to officially recognize Amaravati as the state’s sole capital . The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2026 is scheduled for introduction in the Lok Sabha today. The bill seeks to amend the 2014 Reorganization Act to explicitly state that Amaravati will serve as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Clarifying the Capital Post-Bifurcation

Following the 2014 bifurcation, Hyderabad remained the joint capital for ten years. With that period ending, the need for a dedicated capital for Andhra Pradesh became urgent. Drafted by the Ministry of Home Affairs , the amendment aligns with the NDA government’s vision under TDP leadership. Experts believe that once Parliament approves the bill, it will eliminate potential legal and political disputes over the capital.

Assembly Resolution Forms the Basis

The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, on February 28, passed a historic resolution unanimously endorsing Amaravati as the sole capital. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has forwarded copies of the resolution to the Union Home Minister and the Lok Sabha Speaker. Acting swiftly, the Centre is preparing to introduce the amendment in Parliament, respecting the aspirations of the state’s people.

Vision of a World-Class Capital

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu emphasized that Amaravati cannot be moved or altered. “Amaravati is not just a city; it is the foundation for Andhra Pradesh’s future. By 2028, it will evolve into a fully developed, self-sufficient, world-class blue-green city with modern infrastructure,” he said. He also highlighted that Amaravati will act as a crucial driver of economic growth for the state.
