In a significant last-minute intervention, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has advised ZEE5 to withhold the release of the controversial docu-series “Lawrence of Punjab” , triggering a wider debate over OTT regulation and the portrayal of real-life criminals . The series, based on gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, was scheduled to premiere on April 27.

The move came after the Punjab Police raised serious concerns that the show could disturb public order , glorify organised crime , and negatively influence youth . Authorities flagged that the series includes dramatised sequences and real footage that may romanticise criminal networks , particularly in a state already grappling with gangster-related violence .

The controversy intensified when Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking a ban. During the hearing, the Centre informed the court that it had already issued an advisory to ZEE5. With this development, the petitioner’s concerns were addressed, and the case was disposed of.

The docu-series, directed by Raaghav Dar, has been positioned by its makers as a crime case study , tracing Bishnoi’s rise through student politics , media amplification , and evolving criminal ecosystems. However, the government has taken a cautious stance, emphasising that such portrayals may undermine ongoing investigations , influence witnesses , and impact judicial proceedings , given that cases linked to Bishnoi remain active.

The timing of the Centre’s intervention is critical. The advisory was issued just days before the scheduled release, following a combination of police alerts , legal proceedings , and heightened public sensitivity in Punjab. Officials pointed out that the decision also aligns with a prior 2025 government directive urging OTT platforms to exercise editorial discretion while dealing with content related to crime and gangsters.

In its communication, the ministry reiterated that content capable of inciting violence or disrupting law and order must be handled with extreme caution. It also referred to earlier court observations that warned against media material that could promote criminal behaviour or interfere with ongoing trials.

The episode underscores a growing tension between creative freedom and regulatory oversight in India’s rapidly expanding OTT space. While platforms continue to explore real-life crime narratives, authorities are increasingly vigilant about their societal impact , especially in regions where such issues remain deeply sensitive.

As the debate unfolds, the fate of “Lawrence of Punjab” remains uncertain, but the controversy has already set a precedent for how crime-based storytelling may be scrutinised in the future.
