A soil moisture monitoring device developed by Pratibha Warwade and her research team from the Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) has been granted a patent, the institute said on Saturday.

The IoT-enabled device is part of a smart irrigation system designed to automate water supply for crops, particularly vegetables and fruits grown under drip irrigation. Unlike other devices in the market, it is low-cost, user-friendly, and specifically tailored for local agricultural conditions , providing real-time soil moisture and environmental data to optimize irrigation efficiently.

Warwade, an assistant professor in CUJ’s civil engineering department, described the patent as a significant achievement for modern agriculture. “The device provides farmers with real-time soil moisture levels, making irrigation management efficient, accurate, and scientifically sound,” she said.

The device’s affordability stems from the use of cost-effective components, focus on essential functionality, and in-house development, making it significantly cheaper than similar commercial products.

The Madhya Pradesh Agriculture Department has approached Warwade to explore its use for farmers, and it is expected to be beneficial in Jharkhand as well. Warwade said the innovation opens new possibilities for smart agriculture , supporting water conservation, higher crop production, and sustainable development .

The achievement was realised under a joint project with the research team of Indira Gandhi Agricultural University in Raipur, Chhattisgarh . CUJ Vice-Chancellor Professor Kshiti Bhusan Das praised Warwade for contributing to societal welfare by converting research into patented technology, reflecting the growing role of Indian universities in developing practical, affordable, and impactful agricultural innovations .
