Central Philippines shaken by 6.9 quake; roads crack, homes collapsed

A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines late Tuesday night, causing widespread damage, power outages, and sending residents fleeing into the streets. The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 17 kilometers northeast of Bogo City in Cebu province, a coastal area with a population of around 90,000 people.

Extent of the Damage

The tremors were felt across several provinces in the Visayas region, including Cebu, Bohol, and Leyte. In Bogo City, the earthquake caused significant structural damage. Concrete walls of houses and a fire station collapsed, knocking out power and creating deep cracks in asphalt roads.

Firefighter Rey Cañete described the scene at their fire station: “We were in our barracks to retire for the day when the ground started to shake and we rushed out but stumbled to the ground because of the intense shaking.” He and three other firemen sustained cuts and bruises. They provided first aid to at least three residents injured by falling debris, including an elderly man with head injuries who was taken to a nearby hospital.

In nearby towns such as Daanbantayan, Medellin, and San Remigio, additional damages were reported. The Archdiocesan Shrine of Sta. Rose de Lima in Daanbantayan partially collapsed, and several structures in Bantayan were also affected.

Casualties and Injuries

As of the latest reports, at least five fatalities have been confirmed. Four of these deaths occurred in San Remigio, including a child who was killed when a wall collapsed while they were asleep. Another fatality and numerous injuries were reported in Medellin.

Emergency medical teams have been deployed to treat the injured and assist in rescue operations.

Tsunami Warning and Aftershocks

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) initially issued a tsunami warning for the coastlines of Cebu, Leyte, and Biliran provinces due to the possibility of waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) high. Residents were advised to stay away from the shore.

The warning was later lifted after no unusual sea-level disturbances were observed. However, PHIVOLCS has cautioned the public to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro has assured residents that aid is on the way. Relief goods and medicines have been dispatched to Danao and are en route to Bogo City, contingent on road accessibility. The Department of Health and other agencies are coordinating efforts to provide immediate assistance.

Classes and work have been suspended in affected areas until safety assessments of buildings can be completed.
