
Census 2027: House Listing Operations in J-K to begin June 1
The House Listing Operations (HLO) for Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted from June 1 to 30 as part of the upcoming Census 2027 , with self-enumeration by citizens starting 15 days earlier to ensure a more accurate, smoother, and faster census exercise, officials said on Wednesday. The government is expected to issue the official notification by January 31 .
The schedule was finalised by the Union Territory Level Census Coordination Committee , chaired by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo , who emphasised the need for robust field-level execution to ensure the census is accurate, comprehensive, and timely. Field-level efficiency is crucial to cover every household , guide citizens in self-enumeration , and maintain data quality for national planning and resource allocation.
Amit Sharma , Director of Census Operations for J-K and Ladakh, presented the framework and key features of Census 2027 , highlighting India’s first fully digital census . Innovations include the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) , provision for self-enumeration , and caste enumeration , aimed at improving accuracy, speed, and citizen participation. Detailed timelines for training, self-enumeration, house listing, and population enumeration were also outlined.
To facilitate smooth operations, technical assistants and charge officials will support citizens during the 15-day self-enumeration period. Officials approved the expedited hiring of manpower at UT, district, and charge levels. Deputy commissioners have been instructed to set up District Level Census Cells , nominate officers for coordination, training, and supervision , and ensure timely identification of master trainers, supervisors, and enumerators .
Chief Secretary Dulloo underscored the importance of close coordination between the administration and the census directorate . He directed all deputy commissioners to provide full support to ensure accurate and efficient data collection and assured the government’s complete cooperation for successful completion of the census exercise .
