What began as a joyous celebration of Durga Puja in Padalphata village, a tribal-dominated settlement in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district, ended in heartbreak when 11 young residents drowned during idol immersion on Thursday evening.

The victims, ranging from an eight-year-old girl to a 25-year-old woman, were riding a tractor trolley carrying Durga idols when it tilted and plunged into a nearby lake. The deceased include Aarti (18), Urmila (16), Sharmila (15), Kiran (16), Patli (25), Sangeeta (16), Chanda (8), Dinesh (13), Ganesh (20), Revsingh (13), and Ayush (9).

The village of 350 residents, alive with festive dances and music during Dessehra celebrations was plunged into silence on Friday, broken only by the cries of grieving families. Video footage circulating on social media captures villagers celebrating just moments before the tragedy, dancing and throwing colours ahead of the idol immersion.

Villagers have expressed not only grief but also anger at what they describe as administrative negligence. Sawan Dangode, a local youth, said, “People from 25 to 30 nearby villages come here to immerse Durga idols. Yet, the authorities did not post any personnel to warn about the lake’s depth. These children were our future, and now they are gone.”

Khandwa District Magistrate Rishav Gupta said villagers had warned the devotees about the lake’s depth, but due to “over-enthusiasm,” the tractor trolley moved into the water, causing it to overturn.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to each deceased’s next of kin and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also mourned the loss and announced Rs 4 lakh compensation for each family affected.

Usually tragic accidents of similar nature are linked to overcrowded immersion sites and inadequate safety measures. Authorities have repeatedly urged devotees to exercise caution and follow safety protocols during idol immersion, but accidents continue to occur.
