CBI Takes Over Twisha Sharma Death Probe, Husband and Mother-in-Law Booked
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday formally took over the investigation into the death of former actor-model Twisha Sharma , who was found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12. The agency registered an FIR against her husband, Samarth Singh , and mother-in-law, Giribala Singh , after re-registering the case originally filed by the Bhopal police.
The CBI invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act , mirroring charges already filed by the state police. Officials said a Special Crime Unit had reached Bhopal earlier in the day to collect evidence and documents linked to the case.
According to the FIR, Twisha was brought to AIIMS Bhopal by her husband late on May 12, where doctors declared her dead. The post-mortem report cited “antemortem hanging by ligature” as the cause of death while also noting multiple simple injuries caused by blunt force on other parts of the body.
Twisha’s family alleged that she faced dowry-related harassment, mental torture, and domestic violence after her marriage in December 2025. They claimed her final phone call with her mother was abruptly disconnected amid an argument at home.
The case has triggered intense public attention and political debate in Madhya Pradesh, with opposition parties questioning the handling of the investigation and demanding accountability in cases involving alleged dowry abuse and violence against women. The transfer of the case to the CBI followed mounting pressure on the state government and widespread social media campaigns seeking an independent probe.
Hearing the matter, the Supreme Court of India said it would ensure a fair, independent, and impartial investigation and cautioned all parties against making public statements that could prejudice the inquiry.
