Caught on Camera: Riyan Parag’s Dressing Room Vaping Sparks IPL Controversy
Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has found himself at the centre of a fresh controversy after television cameras allegedly captured him vaping inside the dressing room during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on Tuesday night.
The incident quickly spread across social media, triggering sharp reactions from fans and cricket observers. Parag was seen inhaling an e-cigarette during the live broadcast, moments that were not meant for public viewing but were still picked up by cameras.
This comes at a time when e-cigarettes are banned in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA), 2019 , which prohibits their production, sale, distribution, and advertising. The law also includes penalties that can extend to imprisonment up to one year and/or fines for first-time offences.
Parag, who scored a quickfire 29 off 16 balls in Rajasthan Royals’ successful chase of 223 runs , has had an inconsistent season with the bat. However, this off-field incident has now overshadowed his performance on the field.
Officials linked to the IPL and BCCI reportedly described the act as “careless” , especially in an era where dressing rooms are under constant broadcast surveillance. According to sources, while e-cigarette use may not be uncommon among players, doing so in a visible, camera-accessible space was considered avoidable and irresponsible .
The controversy has also reignited debate over dressing room privacy in televised cricket , an issue raised by some captains during a pre-season meeting in Mumbai. Players had earlier expressed concern about sensitive moments being captured during live coverage, but broadcasters continue to maintain their coverage protocols.
A franchise official from Rajasthan Royals did not offer any comment on the incident.
This is not the first controversy involving the franchise this season, adding further scrutiny on the team’s off-field discipline.
