Caste census call grows in Andhra

Backward Classes (BC) organizations and political parties in Andhra Pradesh are demanding a comprehensive and scientific caste census. In a round-table meeting hosted by the CPI State Committee in Vijayawada, participants urged the government, led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, to include the census as part of the national population count.

In addition to the census, the groups are demanding proportional reservations for BCs in local bodies, similar to the system adopted in Telangana. This measure would ensure that reservations for BC communities are based on their actual population numbers.

To amplify their demands, the organizations have resolved to form Joint Action Committees (JACs). Their plan includes submitting memorandums to all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), organizing district-level round-table meetings, and conducting seminars across the state. These actions are intended to build momentum for a unified statewide movement aimed at securing the rights and reservations of BCs.

The conference, which was attended by leaders from various BC associations, trade unions, and political parties, signals a concerted effort to pressure the government into addressing their long-standing demands for accurate data and equitable representation.
