Carlos Alcaraz secures year-end No. 1, outshines Italian challenger Jannik Sinner

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz beamed with pride on Friday as he lifted the trophy for the year-end No. 1 player, cementing his dominance in men’s tennis for 2025.

The 22-year-old had already secured the year-end top ranking after a flawless performance in the ATP Finals group stage in Turin, sweeping all three matches. He was presented the trophy at the Inalpi Arena shortly before Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner played his match against Ben Shelton.

“It’s a great pleasure for me to be No. 1 in the world again,” Alcaraz said. “It’s a goal I work hard for every day with my team. This journey isn’t done alone, it’s with your team, family, and close people supporting you through the tough and good moments.”

This marks the second time Alcaraz has finished a year at the top of the rankings. He first achieved the feat in 2022 at just 19, becoming the youngest player ever to do so.

Sinner’s Chase Falls Short:

Sinner, the top Italian player, was the only one with a theoretical chance to challenge Alcaraz for the year-end No. 1. However, the Spaniard’s lead of over 2,200 points made the task practically impossible. Even a perfect run at the ATP Finals by Sinner, combined with multiple losses by Alcaraz, would not have been enough. Sinner also had a larger number of points to defend from last year, further narrowing his chances.

Alcaraz’s consistent performance in high-stakes events throughout the year, including Grand Slams, ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and other key tour events, ensured he amassed enough points to stay ahead. Only a player’s best 19 results count toward the ATP rankings, and Alcaraz’s strong finishes across these tournaments gave him a healthy cushion over his rivals.

Other top contenders:

The rest of the top-10 players, including Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Jack Draper, Lorenzo Musetti, Ben Shelton, and Alex de Minaur, were far behind in points and posed no real threat to the top two. Alcaraz’s dominance this season reflects not just skill, but consistent performance across all levels of events, the key to staying at the summit of the ATP rankings.

A season to remember as Alcaraz’s 2025 campaign has been remarkable. Beyond racking up points, he has displayed resilience in tense matches, adaptability across surfaces, and mental toughness that sets him apart.
