Captured Tiger Released into Papikondalu National Park After Health Check, GPS Tagging
A three-year-old male tiger that triggered panic in parts of East Godavari district after straying into human settlements has been safely released into Papikondalu National Park following medical evaluation and scientific monitoring measures. Forest officials confirmed that the animal, captured near Kurmapuram village earlier this month, was released into the protected forest landscape after veterinarians certified it fit for survival in the wild.
The tiger entered Kurmapuram on February 6, sparking fear among residents after reportedly killing livestock and moving close to habitation zones. Forest department personnel launched a carefully planned operation using tracking teams and tranquilisation to capture the animal without harm, bringing relief to villagers.
After capture, the tiger was transported to the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam , where veterinary specialists conducted comprehensive health examinations . Officials released the animal only after confirming its fitness and hunting ability, and after obtaining clearance from the National Tiger Conservation Authority . To enable continuous monitoring, a GPS radio collar was fitted to track its movements and detect any approach toward populated areas.
Authorities selected Papikondalu as the release site due to its dense forest cover , strong prey availability , and minimal human presence , making it suitable habitat for large carnivores. Located in the Eastern Ghats along the Godavari River , the park forms part of an important wildlife corridor supporting rich biodiversity . Officials believe the young tiger was dispersing in search of territory, a natural behaviour seen as tiger habitats recover. Surveillance has been strengthened to prevent human-wildlife conflict , and residents near forest fringes have been urged to remain alert and report wildlife movement immediately.
