Candidates can challenge WB SSC answers

The West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) on Tuesday night uploaded the preliminary model answers for the teacher recruitment exam for classes 9 and 10, held on September 7, 2025. The step is aimed at ensuring transparency and giving candidates the opportunity to raise objections before the final keys are issued.

SSC Chairman Siddhartha Majumdar said candidates can challenge the answers between September 20 and 25 by paying a fee of Rs 100 per question, refundable if the suggestion is found valid. A panel of experts will review these objections, and the final keys will be prepared accordingly. Evaluation of answer sheets will begin after the Durga Puja vacation.

The commission added that the preliminary model answers for classes 11 and 12 exams, conducted on September 14, will be uploaded on September 20, 2025. Majumdar confirmed that the recruitment process will be completed by December 31, 2025, as directed by the Supreme Court.

This year, 2.91 lakh candidates appeared for the recruitment exams, highlighting the demand for teaching posts in West Bengal. The SSC said the structured process of uploading keys and inviting objections is meant to maintain fairness and clarity in the evaluation system.

The Bright Side of Digital Learning

The advantages of digital classrooms are both obvious and profound.

Access to diverse resources: Students are no longer limited to a single textbook. Digital platforms provide videos, simulations, interactive quizzes, and real-time updates that make learning dynamic and engaging. A lesson on the solar system can now include a NASA animation; a science experiment can be demonstrated virtually before being performed in the lab.

Personalized learning: Software can track individual progress and adjust the difficulty of exercises to match a student’s level. Slow learners can revisit a topic as often as needed, while advanced students can move ahead without waiting for the entire class.

Teacher empowerment: Digital tools reduce the drudgery of repetitive tasks like marking attendance or grading objective tests. This frees teachers to focus on mentoring and creative instruction.

Wider reach: For rural schools that struggle to attract specialist teachers, digital content can bring high-quality lectures from the best educators in the country to the remotest village.

Skill building: Early exposure to technology prepares students for a job market increasingly defined by digital literacy, coding, and data skills.

The Shadows Behind the Screen

Despite the excitement, the shift to digital classrooms has revealed serious shortcomings.

Digital divide: India’s stark socio-economic inequalities mean that access to reliable electricity, high-speed internet, and modern devices is far from universal. Government schools in remote areas often lack even basic infrastructure. The pandemic laid bare the gap, with millions of students falling behind simply because they lacked a smartphone or stable internet connection.

Quality concerns: Not all digital content is created equal. Poorly designed apps, excessive screen time, and overreliance on pre-recorded videos can reduce learning to passive consumption rather than active engagement.

Teacher training gaps: Technology is only as effective as the teacher using it. Many educators struggle with new tools, leading to technical glitches, superficial usage, or outright resistance.

Health and social issues: Extended screen exposure contributes to eye strain, sleep disorders, and reduced physical activity. The absence of face-to-face interaction can also weaken social skills and emotional bonding among students.

Data privacy: The rapid entry of private EdTech companies has raised concerns about student data security, advertising, and commercialization of education.

Solutions for a Balanced Future

If India is to harness the promise of digital classrooms without deepening inequalities, a thoughtful, multi-layered strategy is essential.

1. Infrastructure first: Before introducing smart boards, governments must ensure stable electricity, internet connectivity, and basic classroom facilities. Public–private partnerships can help equip rural schools with solar power and affordable broadband.

2. Teacher training: Continuous professional development should be mandatory. Training must focus not just on operating devices but on integrating technology into pedagogy—how to blend interactive content with traditional teaching for maximum impact.

3. Hybrid learning models: Digital tools should complement, not replace, the human element. A blended approach—where teachers lead discussions and use technology to enrich lessons—protects against the pitfalls of screen-only education.

4. Affordable access: Subsidized tablets, community learning centres, and shared digital libraries can bridge the urban–rural divide. Local language content must be prioritized so that technology empowers rather than alienates.

5. Regulation of EdTech: Clear guidelines on data privacy, content quality, and advertising practices are critical to protect children from exploitation.

The Way Forward

Digital classrooms are not a passing trend; they are a permanent feature of India’s educational landscape. But technology alone cannot solve the deeper structural problems of the school system—overcrowded classrooms, shortage of trained teachers, and outdated curricula. The real promise of digital learning lies in its ability to supplement human interaction, not to substitute it. India must therefore treat technology as a tool, not a magic wand.

The challenge for policymakers, educators, and parents is to strike a careful balance. We must ensure that the child in a government school in a tribal district enjoys the same quality of digital resources as the child in a private urban campus. We must resist the temptation to equate more gadgets with better learning. And we must remember that the ultimate goal of education is not just information delivery, but the nurturing of curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking.

If India succeeds in making digital classrooms inclusive, engaging, and teacher-driven, it can transform the learning experience for an entire generation.
