Can IPL Franchises Push Injured Players Too Far? BCCI Secretary Opens Up on Franchise Freedom
The controversy surrounding Varun Chakravarthy’s injury has reignited debate over player welfare in the IPL after BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia admitted that the board has limited authority over franchise decisions during the tournament.
The issue came to the forefront after reports emerged that the Kolkata Knight Riders spinner played despite suffering a hairline fracture in his left foot during the team’s recent clash against Gujarat Titans . Chakravarthy was visibly struggling during his spell, often hobbling between deliveries, which immediately raised questions over why he was allowed to continue despite the apparent injury concern.
The matter gained further attention because Chakravarthy is a centrally contracted Indian player , and there is generally an understanding between IPL franchises and the BCCI regarding injury monitoring. Typically, franchise physios remain in touch with medical staff at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru , sharing updates on workload management and player fitness to avoid aggravating injuries ahead of national assignments.
However, Saikia acknowledged that the BCCI cannot exercise complete control during the IPL season.
“Franchises take care of the injuries and fitness of players. Physios from the Centre of Excellence are monitoring them as well, but when the IPL is going on, we cannot interfere too much ,” Saikia said.
His remarks have triggered fresh discussion over whether the BCCI should have stronger powers to prevent franchises from fielding injured players, especially when India’s international calendar remains packed with major tournaments and bilateral commitments.
Saikia also admitted that the situation would have been handled differently if the player was on national duty.
“Had it been an Indian team situation , our control would have been more,” he said.
The episode has once again highlighted the growing conflict between franchise priorities and long term player welfare in modern cricket. With the IPL becoming increasingly competitive and physically demanding, concerns continue to rise over whether players are being pushed beyond safe limits in the race for results.
