Can Bengaluru power India’s 2nm chip dream?
Bengaluru has once again positioned itself at the heart of India’s semiconductor aspirations with the inauguration of ARM’s new office by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This unit is set to design cutting-edge two-nanometer (2nm) chips, a technological leap that could redefine India’s place in the global electronics landscape. Vaishnaw highlighted that India’s semiconductor journey has gained momentum since 2014, driven by stable policies and a visionary push under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The aim is clear: transform India into a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047, with homegrown expertise in semiconductor design and manufacturing.
ARM, a British chip-design company, has an extensive global footprint, powering everything from mobile phones to large-scale servers. Its choice of Bengaluru is no coincidence. The city boasts a deep talent pool of engineers, designers, and researchers, nurtured by India’s Semiconductor Mission. Over 278 universities and institutes now have access to state-of-the-art electronic design automation (EDA) tools, and students are actively designing next-generation chips. Already, 28 chips have been created, signaling that India is moving beyond theoretical research into tangible outputs.
Beyond design, India is building a full semiconductor ecosystem. Ten manufacturing units are under construction, with one already in pilot production and two more set to start soon. Suppliers for critical chemicals, gases, and other fabrication essentials are establishing local facilities. Initiatives like the India DeepTech Fund and design-linked incentives aim to attract global investment and support sectors ranging from AI to biotechnology, ensuring the semiconductor sector is not just confined to chip design but spans the entire production stack.
The broader electronics industry in India underscores the urgency. Electronics manufacturing has grown six-fold over the past decade, with exports increasing eight-fold. This surge is doubling the demand for semiconductors, making it imperative for India to develop both domestic capabilities and global partnerships.
Yet challenges remain. Designing 2nm chips requires ultra-precision technology, substantial R&D investment, and collaboration across hardware, software, and materials sectors. India’s strength lies in talent and policy support, but catching up with global leaders like the US, Taiwan, and South Korea will require sustained effort, innovation, and infrastructure development.
Bengaluru’s role is pivotal. With ARM leading advanced chip design and India steadily building manufacturing capabilities, the city could become the nucleus of India’s 2nm dream. If executed well, this initiative could mark the start of a new era where India transitions from a consumer of semiconductors to a designer and manufacturer on the global stage, truly shaping the future of technology.
