Cabinet Sub-Committee Formed to Assess El Niño Effects in Telangana
The Telangana government has constituted a cabinet sub-committee under Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu to review drought conditions and assess the possible impact of El Niño on the state. The panel will examine emerging challenges, recommend preventive measures and help the government prepare an effective response to potential weather-related risks.
The sub-committee will be chaired by Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, with ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, Danasari Anasuya Seethakka, Tummala Nageswara Rao and Vakiti Srihari serving as members. The government has also appointed senior official K. Ramakrishna Rao as a special invitee nominated by the Chief Minister.
The Secretary of the Planning Department will serve as the convener of the committee and coordinate its activities. The panel is expected to assess the evolving situation and provide recommendations to help the state administration take timely decisions.
The government has directed the committee to closely monitor drought conditions and the effects of El Niño in Telangana. It will review developments on a regular basis, examine the potential consequences for the state and suggest suitable interventions to reduce the impact of adverse conditions.
The committee will also identify issues that require the attention of the Central government and prepare proposals for discussions with the Union government. This responsibility is intended to help Telangana pursue appropriate support and coordinated action wherever necessary.
El Niño is a climate phenomenon associated with the periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. It can influence weather patterns across different regions, although its effects vary from one event to another. In India, El Niño conditions can sometimes be associated with weaker monsoon rainfall, raising concerns about agricultural activity, water availability and drought preparedness.
By establishing the sub-committee, the Telangana government aims to strengthen its monitoring mechanism and ensure that potential risks receive timely attention. The panel's assessments and recommendations are expected to guide decisions on preparedness and mitigation as the state evaluates the possible consequences of drought and El Niño.
