Cabinet approves ₹1,677 crore expansion of Srinagar International Airport

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a ₹1,677 crore expansion of the Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport , a move welcomed by Civil Aviation Minister Shri Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu . The project, to be implemented by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), is expected to be completed within two years and aims to strengthen regional connectivity and economic growth in Jammu & Kashmir.

Currently, the airport’s terminal handles around 2.5 million passengers annually, while actual traffic reached nearly 4.47 million passengers in FY 2024-25 , with about 28,500 aircraft movements. Seasonal peaks, especially during the summer tourist season , often stretch the existing capacity. After expansion, annual passenger handling will rise fourfold to 10 million , and peak hour capacity will increase from 950 to 2,900 passengers , reducing congestion and improving passenger convenience.

The airport apron , the area where planes park, load passengers, refuel, and are serviced, will be expanded to accommodate 15 aircraft, including wide-body jets , enabling more international flights and better domestic connectivity to major cities across India. Tourism, which contributes roughly 7% to the Union Territory’s GDP , is expected to rise to 10-12% , with visitor numbers projected to grow from 1.7 crore annually to 2.7-3 crore by 2030. The upgrade will also support seasonal tourism and promote exports of regional products such as apples, saffron, handicrafts, carpets, dry fruits, and horticultural produce.

The new terminal will blend Kashmiri cultural heritage with modern, sustainable design features, including energy-efficient systems, natural lighting, and water conservation measures, targeting a high GRIHA sustainability rating.

Speaking on the approval, Shri Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said: "Srinagar Airport has become a symbol of the Kashmir Valley’s resurgence. Within two years, we aim to develop a modern terminal that enhances connectivity, strengthens local industries, and accelerates development in the region."

The project underscores the Government of India’s commitment to regional integration, world-class infrastructure, and inclusive development in Jammu & Kashmir.
