C P Radhakrishnan Administers Oath to New Rajya Sabha MPs Across Seven States

Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan on Monday administered the oath of office to nine newly elected members of the Upper House, marking their formal entry into Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session.

The newly inducted members represent seven states Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Rajasthan and West Bengal. The oath-taking ceremony was held in the presence of other members of the House as parliamentary proceedings began.

Among those who took oath was Mukeshbhai J Rathwa (BJP) from Gujarat, along with Pawan Khera (Congress) representing Karnataka and Mahesh Kewat (BJP) from Madhya Pradesh. From the northeastern states, Jamesh Pangsang Kongkal Sangma (NPP) took oath from Meghalaya, while Khiangte Laltluagkima represented Mizoram.

Rajasthan’s Satish Poonia (BJP) was also among the newly sworn-in members. West Bengal saw three members joining the Rajya Sabha Prakash Chik Baraik (BJP) , Sushmita Dev (BJP) , and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray (BJP).

The induction of the new members comes as the Upper House begins legislative business during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is expected to witness discussions on several key issues, including government policies, economic matters and pending legislative proposals.

The Rajya Sabha, the Council of States, plays a crucial role in India’s parliamentary system by representing the interests of states and Union Territories. Members of the Upper House are elected by the elected representatives of state legislative assemblies through proportional representation, while some members are nominated by the President for their expertise in fields such as literature, science, art and social service.

Some other members who were elected earlier had already completed their oath-taking formalities during the inter-session period, before the commencement of the Monsoon Session. With the latest oath ceremony, the newly elected representatives have officially assumed their responsibilities in the Rajya Sabha.
