BYD arrival: India’s EV game changer?
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is preparing to expand its footprint in India with the introduction of a new compact SUV, the Atto 2, aimed at the country’s growing electric mobility market. The vehicle has recently been spotted undergoing road tests in India, fueling speculation of an official launch in the near future.
The Atto 2 is positioned as a more affordable option compared to BYD’s existing premium lineup in India. It is equipped with a 45.1 kWh battery pack paired with a single electric motor that produces around 175 horsepower and 290 Nm of peak torque. The model is expected to deliver a driving range of approximately 380 kilometres on a single charge, making it suitable for urban and intercity travel.
In terms of dimensions, the compact SUV measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. Design features noted during testing include a sporty rear spoiler and updated LED lighting, highlighting BYD’s efforts to blend practicality with style.
BYD currently sells four EV models in India the Atto 3, Seal, eMAX 7, and Sealion 7 largely catering to the premium and upper mid-market segments. The planned introduction of the Atto 2 signals the company’s intent to tap into India’s price-sensitive compact SUV category, where demand for affordable electric options is rising.
Although BYD has not yet announced the official launch date or pricing details, the road trials of the Atto 2 indicate that the company is moving closer to bringing the model to Indian customers. Industry analysts note that this development could strengthen competition in India’s EV sector and provide consumers with more accessible electric mobility choices.
