What began as an ordinary construction activity in the historic village of Lakkundi a few days ago has turned into an extraordinary encounter with history, after gold ornaments dating back several centuries were accidentally unearthed , triggering a government-led excavation and renewed attention on the village’s rich past.

The discovery occurred when a young boy stumbled upon a small copper pot filled with gold jewellery while digging at a construction site. The ornaments, weighing about 470 grams , are believed by experts to be 300 to 400 years old . In an act that won widespread praise, the boy promptly handed over the treasure to the district administration, after which officials secured the site and initiated further examination. He was later felicitated for his honesty.

The find immediately set off official action, with the Karnataka government launching a full-scale excavation at the Kote Veerabhadreshwara Temple premises in Lakkundi. A 10-metre by 10-metre area has been formally notified for excavation, and teams from the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage , the Department of Tourism , the Lakkundi Heritage Development Authority , and the district administration have been mobilised. Heavy machinery has been pressed into service, while a group of local workers has been engaged to assist archaeologists on site.

Officials say the jewellery discovery has heightened expectations of further finds, given Lakkundi’s long history as a centre of wealth and trade. Archaeological sources note that the village was once ruled by a succession of powerful dynasties the Chalukyas , Rashtrakutas , Hoysalas , Kalachuris and the Vijayanagara kings each of whom contributed to its prosperity and cultural prominence. Lakkundi is also closely associated with Danachintamani Attimabbe , the famed philanthropist whose patronage of temples and learning is still remembered.

The village’s reputation as a prosperous settlement is supported by historical evidence suggesting that gold coins were minted here in ancient times . Today, its landscape remains dotted with finely carved temples, stepped wells, inscriptions and sculptures that reflect its importance during Karnataka’s medieval period.

This is not the first time Lakkundi’s soil has revealed traces of its affluent past. In November 2024 , an archaeological exploration in the area led to the discovery of thousands of ancient artefacts , including sculptural fragments and structural remains, underscoring the site’s immense archaeological potential. More recently, officials say precious stones such as sapphires, pearls, diamonds and cat’s eye have occasionally been found in different parts of the village.

Archaeologists involved in the present excavation stress that the significance of the exercise goes beyond the recovery of valuables. The digging is expected to yield inscriptions, monuments, sculptures and ornaments that could deepen understanding of Karnataka’s medieval history and Lakkundi’s role within it.

As excavators move carefully through layers of earth near the ancient temple, the discovery of a small pot of gold has once again reminded historians and residents alike that Lakkundi’s past is not just preserved in stone, but still lies buried beneath its soil , waiting to be brought to light.
