BSF personnel killed in Manipur firing, Govt intensifies security operations

A Border Security Force (BSF) constable was shot dead while on patrol in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Friday, underscoring the fragile security situation in the state amid renewed ethnic tensions .

Constable Mithun Mandal , a soldier of the 170 Battalion of the Border Security Force, was struck by a bullet fired from an unknown direction around 4:30 pm near Mongkot Chepu village, officials said. A native of Bhagjan Tola village in West Bengal, Mandal was rushed to a hospital in Imphal but succumbed to his injuries around 6 pm.

Condemning the killing, Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh described Mandal’s death as a “tragic martyrdom” and paid tribute to his service. “A brave son of West Bengal, his sacrifice in the line of duty will never be forgotten,” he said, extending condolences to the bereaved family. The Chief Minister also reiterated that the state government stands firmly with the family and remains committed to ensuring peace, security, and justice .

The incident comes against the backdrop of a deteriorating security situation in Manipur, where fresh violence has been reported in recent weeks . Tensions have resurfaced in parts of Ukhrul district, particularly around Kuki and Tangkhul Naga inhabited villages such as Mongkot Chepu, following sporadic gunfights linked to ethnic hostilities that initially erupted earlier this year.

Security forces have intensified operations in the region in response to the killing. The Manipur Police said search operations and area domination exercises are underway to track down the militants responsible for the attack. Additional deployments have been made in vulnerable areas to prevent further escalation.

The Manipur government, in coordination with central forces, has stepped up surveillance , strengthened patrolling, and reinforced security grids in sensitive districts. Officials said efforts are ongoing to stabilise the situation and prevent further violence , even as concerns persist over intermittent clashes and the presence of armed groups.

Mandal’s killing highlights the continuing risks faced by security personnel deployed in conflict-hit regions, as authorities work to restore normalcy in the northeastern state.
