Bruno Fernandes on the Bench! Carrick Takes Bold Call as Manchester United Struggle

Under-pressure Manchester United manager Michael Carrick made a major selection call on Sunday by dropping captain Bruno Fernandes to the bench for the Premier League clash against Bournemouth, as the club struggles to arrest a worrying run of poor results.

The decision comes just four days after Fernandes appeared to criticise his manager following United’s humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, adding another layer of tension to an already difficult period for the English giants.

Carrick had responded to the defeat by stressing that effort and commitment were non-negotiable, saying players must run both forward and backwards to win matches. His decision to leave Fernandes out of the starting XI has now drawn attention to the growing pressure on the manager and the challenges facing the team.

Speaking before the Bournemouth match, Carrick described the move as a “pure football” decision, playing down suggestions that the selection was linked to the apparent disagreement between the two.

The omission is particularly significant given Fernandes’ importance to United. The Portuguese midfielder was voted England’s Player of the Year last season, and Sunday’s match marked only the sixth time he had been named on the bench for a Premier League game since joining the club in January 2020, according to Opta statistics.

United’s form has left little room for error. The club had gone seven consecutive matches without a win in all competitions and had managed just one victory in its opening seven Premier League fixtures this season.

With results deteriorating and questions mounting over his future, Carrick has urged his players to demonstrate “humility and hard work” on the pitch. Dropping the captain represents a bold attempt to change the team’s fortunes, but the decision also raises questions about the squad’s unity and whether United can respond when it matters most.
