The Telangana government has fulfilled its assurance to the family of Excise Constable Gajula Soumya , a native of Nizamabad district who lost her life while performing her duty during an anti-narcotics operation . Soumya sustained fatal injuries after being deliberately hit by a vehicle carrying ganja smugglers when she attempted to stop it during a late-night vehicle check near Madhavnagar in January 2026. She was part of a special excise team acting on intelligence inputs when the suspects rammed into her vehicle in an attempt to escape.

Following the incident, Soumya was rushed for treatment and later shifted to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad, where she succumbed to her injuries. Authorities seized contraband from the vehicle and arrested the suspects involved, as the attack triggered widespread concern over the risks faced by frontline enforcement personnel .

In recognition of her sacrifice, the state government provided financial assistance of ₹1 crore to the bereaved family. Honouring the promise made during her funeral on February 1 , the government also extended compassionate employment to her brother, Gajula Shravan , appointing him as a Junior Assistant in the Excise Department . The appointment letter was handed over in the presence of District Collector Ila Tripathi , with the process completed within 23 days , underscoring the administration’s commitment to supporting families of personnel who die in the line of duty.

Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao stated that the government is considering measures to strengthen the safety of excise personnel engaged in field operations, including the provision of firearms and improved protective equipment. He emphasized that the state would safeguard its employees and take strict action against those who attack government officials.

The tragic incident has drawn attention to the growing challenges faced by excise teams combating narcotics smuggling networks. Officers conducting night patrols often operate in high-risk conditions, prompting calls for enhanced training, better safety gear, and stronger coordination among enforcement agencies.

Expressing gratitude, Shravan thanked Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for standing by the family during their difficult time. The swift financial relief and employment support reaffirm the government’s commitment to those who risk their lives in public service.
