BRO Clears Snow, Reopens Key J-K High-Altitude Highways

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has restored the 112-kilometre Kishtwar-Sansari road , reconnecting the Doda-Kishtwar valley in Jammu & Kashmir with the Lahaul-Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh , following intensive snow clearance operations in extreme winter conditions.

The road, blocked by heavy snowfall between January 22 and 23 , and disrupted by fresh snow on January 25 and 27, was fully reopened after BRO teams cleared nearly 3.5 feet of accumulated snow within 72 hours. The operations were carried out by the 118 Road Construction Company of the 35 Border Roads Task Force under Project Sampark , in high-altitude terrain reaching 8,759 feet .

The Kishtwar-Sansari road is a crucial lifeline , enabling the transport of essential commodities, agricultural produce, and other goods . It also provides remote communities with access to healthcare, education, and emergency services , highlighting its economic and humanitarian importance.

In a parallel operation, BRO is also actively clearing snow on NH 701A, the Mughal Road , which connects Poonch and Rajouri districts to Srinagar via Peer Ki Gali . Facing 8–10 feet of snow , manpower and equipment from Project Sampark/BRO are working to maintain mid-winter connectivity , ensuring vital movement of people and goods.

A defence spokesperson said, “The swift restoration of the Kishtwar-Sansari road and ongoing work on the Mughal Road reflect BRO’s commitment to maintaining strategic and public connectivity in challenging terrain.”

BRO officials praised the dedication of their teams, noting that these efforts are critical for economic continuity, emergency services, and strategic mobility in high-altitude regions.
